It is a mixture of fact and fiction, presented in well-written prose with a fast-moving and extremely interesting story line which has successfully incorporated a strong sense of time, place, people and culture of the era. The background of the storyline is the struggle of the Hebrews, and their release after a long exile in Babylon, by the Persian King, Cyrus. It is beautifully woven into an exciting, adventure with a feisty young girl as protagonist. The beautiful Chaim, at fourteen, is strong, assertive and determined to fulfil her father’s wish. She is summoned by Belshazzar, the puppet king, to the palace of the Hanging Gardens to be his bride. But her father, the leader of the Ibris, is arrested as a spy. She decides that she must escape her gilded cage to try and save him. But his wish is for her to make her way to Yerushalim. Chaim, together with her dearest friend Ettu, a renowned Psalter and now a slave, enlist the help of the head eunuch, and escape the palace disguised as scribes. They encounter many close calls and their lives are frequently in danger from the threatening forces that surround them. Exposure is always just a breath away. But they are guided by the words of their teachings and these words are their protective force. During one of their close encounters, Chaim is saved by Mohganees, a Persian soldier whom she mistakenly believes to be a spy. He takes on a pivotal role in her life. By her journey’s end, she is transformed from a basic believer to one of full faith and her relationship with Mohganess shifts dramatically. The story is comprised of interesting characters and adventures through dangerous territories and great challenges which are faith affirming. It has religious leanings, and moral teachings which fit the era, with many Bible quotes scattered throughout." --Anastasia Gonis, Buzzwords Magazine. “As the Eagle, Flies the King is a fascinating blend of history, dosed liberally with good story telling, poetry and spiced with thought-provoking quotes such as ‘the origin of a true man are his deeds.’ Set with a Biblical backdrop, and with excerpts from Biblical passages to progress the story, Wendy McNeice's exciting mixture of fact and fiction will keep you hooked throughout the entire novel and eagerly anticipating its sequel.”--Wendy Francis, Q B Magazine. http://www.qb.com.au/qbmag.aspx "In this tale of courage, faith and dedication, Wendy McNeice brings to life the ancient civilization of Babylon--palaces and kings, slaves, cutthroats, warriors, Bedouins and women, the wives of the King. As the Eagle, flies the King entices the reader to reach for his Bible, to read again for himself the Book of Daniel--the biblical account of this fascinating action-packed era."—Daphne Saxby Taylor, editor and author. http://hdtaylor.caliph.net.au/ “The literary world has overlooked an amazing adventure resulting in the first charter of human rights--all because of confusion over something as simple as a title.”—James Brown, Faithwriters. http://www.faithwriters.com/ "Wendy McNeice’s portrayal of this amazing period through romance, battles, friendship and faith is exciting, intriguing and will appeal to a variety of different audiences."-- “Wendy McNeice sets a cracking pace in As the Eagle, Flies the King. Fleeing from her gold-screened room in the palace of Belshazzar, regent of Babylon, Chaim is pursued by a Persian spy through embattled towns, desert sands and dangerous temples. Given a strangely-inscribed cylinder, Chaim fears an attack of sorcery and recklessly kicks it in the river without realising that it is a message from her father. As an unexpected romance slowly blossoms, Chaim realises the hand of God has been protecting her throughout her perilous journey as she becomes a player in one of the most remarkable events in human and biblical history.”—Anne Hamilton, author, The Singing Silence. http://www.singingsilence.com/contact.html

The great Babylon was a walled fortress within which were many fortresses. Its walls were 320 feet high, 80 feet thick and over 50 miles in length. It was the greatest fortress in the ancient world...a city of legend...the home of the famed Hanging Gardens of King Nebuchadnezzar. Yet it was toppled overnight...when King Cyrus walked under the wall. It is only in understanding our own ignorance that we can begin to acquire knowledge. Socrates penned these words about 150 years after the events in this book took place. The biblical account behind this fictional story is an amazing tale of peace. I wondered why the first story of world peace is almost unknown... In my story I tell of the hero (Mohganees)--named for the real engineer who damned the river for Persian King Cyrus--diverting the waters of the great Euphrates River, the artery of ancient Mesopotamia. Why was King Cyrus--a Persian who worshipped Bel--announced as God’s ‘anointed one’ in the book of Isaiah? And how did he overthrow this gigantic fortress of King Nebuchandezzar and Kings Nabonidus and Belshazzar after him, without a major battle? Not only did Cyrus achieve the seemingly impossible, ousting the mightiest stronghold in the world, he also established the first Charter of Human Rights by allowing the Israelites to return with their treasures taken by Nebuchadnezzar when he sacked Solomon’s temple. The other fascinating paradox of this story is that the Israelites were a race of servants, yet one of their leaders, a man called Daniel, was raised to be a Prime Minister over many satrapies of Babylon. That an Israelite could be well loved by his Babylonian king is another gem in this tale. Apart from thoses that appear in the Bible, on Cyrus’ cylinder, in Nabonidus’ prayer, or other Babylonian writings mentioned--the characters are fictious. This is a tale of adventure, mystery and a little romance, that fits into the history of a remarkable time. | ![]() Photo by D.
